In this short video I cover how to add a sub domain on hostgator. This is something that can be incredibly beneficial to your web presence. It allows you to basically have more than one website for each domain name without having the pay a renewal fee for every sub domain you have. Your own domain renewal cost will be for the primary domain name and not for all of the sub domain names.

Again, as I’ve said in other videos I’m a huge fan of hostgator. If you’re interested in signing up for a hostgator account please check out this step by step video here: How to Install WordPress on Hostgator:

Another huge benefit of having a sub domain name is that you’re able to mess around with new ideas and layouts for your website without people seeing the changes live. This is especially effective when you discourage search engines from indexing the website within the settings section of the wordpress dashboard. This is something that you could also do when creating client websites as well. You can easily create the website they want on a test sub domain and make the changes they ask for. Once they’re happy with how the website looks you can simply clone it over to their own domain name delete the content from your test site completely to avoid any duplicate content issues for them in the odd case that it does get indexed by any search engines.

I'm unsure of what happens when you add a subdomain. I am quite new to this and if I were to create a subdomain, how would I be able to switch from that to my main domain (for reasons like editing my main domain and switching over to my subdomain when needed for editing)?
