My Computer Programmer Salary History Part 3

[ad_1]
In this video I share my story of how much I got paid as a computer programmer straight out of university in addition to my salary and employment history as time went on.

If you’ve ever wondering about how much an app developer makes or the salary of a computer science grad then I hope you enjoy this video.

I live in Toronto, Canada so these salary numbers have to be taken into context with average cost of living and salaries for software developers in this city.

I’ve worked C#, .NET, WPF, MS Surface, Silverlight, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Flash, Adobe Flex, Windows Phone 7 and finally iOS.

It’s been quite a journey and in the process, I’ve quit 3 times to try to start my own business. At some points, I was making about $18,000 a year while on my own.

Key takeaways:
– Know what you’re worth by keeping a pulse on the current job market
– Don’t give up on your dreams and understand that you might get there in a way you didn’t expect

Website:

CodeWithChris is dedicated to teaching beginners and non-programmers all about building iOS apps. On the site, you’ll find a ton of free resources and tutorials to aid you on your journey to learn iOS development. Many people have successfully picked up Swift 3, Xcode 8 and app building from my course and materials!

What degree do you have? Software engineer or computer science?

Thanks to you i'm actually thinking about coming back to finish the uni. So much is how your tutorials helped me!

Hey Chris. I have no idea if you'll read that (because this is an older video) but you motivated me to learn something new. Right now I'm a system engineer in germany and worked in the field for about 7 years (including 3 years of professional training). I'm bored of it (although I love working with computers since I was 8 or 9) and think about doing something else. I think your channel and tutorials gave me the "kick" I needed to do that. So thank you and keep up the good work!

Hey Chris, I am a computer Science Student in Kenya and I really love your experiences, I would like to know if it could be possible I get an internship in your current company either while still in university or after university. Great work you doing by the way. Keep it up.

Hi, Chris. I found your video about programming an iOS app yesterday and found it very easy to understand. I watched 10 more videos and hope to continue learning the xCode and Swift with your tutorials. I thing you have a great explanatory power that helps to understand difficult concepts in a much easier way. Meanwhile, I have two questions.

    1) How much are you earning with the Youtube Channel now after leaving those A, B, C jobs (assuming that your sharing salary has not been a part of your privacy in this video)? Is it worth leaving a job as a computer engineer? Couldn't you, for example, design mobile apps that earn you millions? Or is it really difficult to find such a successful niche in the mobile app industry?

    2) How much time do I need to learn to professionally design different types of iOS apps (especially games)? I am not a computer engineer, but I have a good background in math, finance, and logic overall.

Thanks again for your tutorials, keep it up, they are really helpful.

I watch the whole 3 parts, i have 2 questions since i am new at this: Number one since you are in TO and you are open to share your revenu, can you tell me what does a 58 000$/yr can NET a week or every 2 weeks and if you could break it for other ranges like 70k-100k. Also 2nd question that is puzzling why every single channel i find about programmers and coders that were successful reaching the 80k-100k , they are all leaving their jobs or about to do it? Is it the salary, the type of job, the atmosphere, the pressure , what is it? While thousands or even millions are aspiring to get there, it seems that those that reach destination are unhappy and what to leave that. I started teaching myself putting long hours, i don't want to continue knowing that once i will reach my goal i will hate it and will probably end like one of you guys trying to get out of the industry. I rather not learn anything and start doing youtube videos instead from now on. Thanks in advance.

I hope these boycotts won't affect your income
if you could make a video game and put an Adsense inside them.. this what I am trying to do….. don't forget to target Japan market because they're willing to pay more than any other country….

for me as a Saudi, I will try to learn how to write an app that gathers youtube, twitter, and Instagram, because these are the most platforms, are used by my people

    thank you

I would just like to ask how's the workload when you quit your regular job and started your own business. I was thinking of setting up a team of app developers and get some clients. Can you please tell me more about working with a project and with a team. Thanks again!

Thanks for the videos Chris. You're very good at giving the audience bite-sized pieces of info eloquently.
I worked at a big wood products company for ten years and picked up a social science undergrad degree in the process. Got promoted internally and learned VBA and SQL.
Now I'm working at a state university as an analyst using SQL, C#, and other languages to manipulate data. I'm working through your videos on the side because knowledge is power. Thanks again.

Hi Chris! I admire your enthusiasm in producing video tutorials on this channel. I am a multimedia tech teacher at an international school and one of the subjects I teach is app development. I do understand how you feel when your followers get excited to produce apps because I feel the same way when my students learn new things in developing apps. Keep up the good work!

lol so far my story is very similar to yours.
    1) Graduated and started working for a company (similar starting salary)
    2) Started my YouTube channel and eventually quit my job after doing a few freelance projects on the side
    3) Currently trying to grow YouTube and reach more people. I enjoy teaching very much. I can tell you are also passionate about it.

Hey Chris, You were wanting to hear about our positions and how we got to where we are.

First, let me say that yes, I feel your video is a great service to those who are trying to get their feet wet.

I am a life-long searcher of information. My career is already well into technology. I've worked with a variety of organizations in technology for no less than 4 years at each with:

    The USMC
    AICPA
    Bloomberg
a Variety of online and ground colleges as an instructor and Dean
Now Chief of Technology for a college in NY

That said, I want to program my own Apps. My programming experience is mostly academic. To contradict that, I am interested in building an App for my college. A Portal so to speak for students that allows users to securely access their accounts and our platforms.

I am using your videos as a first step in the process to better understand our resource needs to accomplish a good App.

So thanks for the videos. Very well constructed indeed.

Thanks for sharing, Chris! Really enjoyed following along: you left me with just one doubt: in what salary range are you now?;-P
I'm in financial services (3 employers so far), traditional economics education, but undecided since a couple of years if I should leave my comfort zone and jump start in the app world ( learned the basics thanks to your tutorials) great job! Can't have enough. (Ps: I fully understand what you mean with getting satisfaction out of seeing others learning from you: was a snowboard teacher for little kids: that was great).

  28. Iain Bryce Avatar

Thanks Chris for your hard work. It was cool to see that you mentioned me in your video. I really enjoyed following along with your tutorial to make the dice app. Without that I wouldn't been able to build it and I too got the satisfaction from it that I was learning something new. Keep up the good work.

  29. Kimberly White Avatar

Thanks for sharing that, was hoping you can have a tutorial on how to build a live streaming application?

  30. David Sheppeard Avatar

Well Chris, I'm a Mechanic. I too have worked with my wife in a service Station(gas Station). I have been watching your channel for some time now to learn a new skill as i am getting to old to climb all over and under cars. The first app that I have built is a scoring app for my sons Rugby team.I am continuing to develop the app as time goes on. Your videos are easy to watch and are just the right length not to lose interest.
