    Look at the periodic table and notice the Noble gases on the right side. Going from side to side, main group elements try to be like their respective noble gas. (Hydrogen tries to be like the noble gas He, so it only has two valence electrons. The rest try to get 8) Noble gases are generally not very reactive. All noble gases have 8 valence electrons, so we assume having 8 valence electrons is sign of stability.

    why does Nitrogen need 8 electrons to fill up and not 6? he already has 5 and needs another one to make an even number (6).
