Still looking for a design company to get back to me, none so far have replied to my e-mails. Is this common in this line of work?

I sent one to you aswell via your website, just need to get started with this sooner than later.

Let me know if you can help, cheers.

Ridiculous that you have 64k subscribers. You're a very talented and intelligent designer. Soooooo underrated!! Keep up the good work!!

    Very insightful as always, Will!

When designing for a client, what do you think of having a primary logo and an alternate version for small scale situations?

My answer is leaning towards including this alternate version as part of your "design package", hence more value. But i'm interested to know what you think!

    Thanks Will!

    Hi Will,

I have been looking online for a logo design company to help design a logo/flyers for my business.

I just wondered if this is something you would do or are you too busy for that?

    Thanks

Logos should look good small, that's a given, but there are still logos out there with thin hairlines, details, and small decorative elements. With these detailed/ornate design, you have to 'set a rule' for them. They can't be scaled past 'x' inches in height/width or the details will be lost. Or you have to have another version when scaled down there the decorations/hairlines are 'thickened' up a bit. Another technique to do for detailed logos are to 'strip' the logo to it's 'bare bones or essentials.' Ex/ Logotype only, or solid mark only, with all the details gone. This would be the secondary logo to be used when 'scaled down.'

I agree and really nice explanation, Will. One question: how do you manage this size issue when dealing with brush lettering style logotypes? I find it rather hard. I'd love to hear your advice on this.

I have to agree that an app icon is the smallest to go with a logo – but as you said there is no parameters

I think that Google and Logitech logo re designs are completely useless and loses all its original character

Will, I really need to know, how do you find clients when you're first starting out? I have advertised myself a tonne on Facebook sale pages and I have my own wix website but I've had no luck. Should I be directly searching for companies to work for? I currently charge £60 a logo, is that too much? I've had 2 extremely pleased clients who have paid that amount for the logo's I've designed for them but that was months ago.

It's nice that they're recognizing that this is something they need. I like their overall logo and this mark is nice, bright, and noticeable on a small screen (which I like). I have had the trouble recently of trying to reel in my clients when designing a logo. I work for a college and many times, they want a logo for an article series and when brainstorming, they just think too detailed. I have to remind them that icons need to get small.

I've had more projects recently where I should simplify peoples Logos. But even without that its a noticable change. Google, Microsoft, Instagram and even fast food chains. People go crazy every time when that happens.

A common rule of thumb is that a logo should be a size of a penny and can be visible looking three inches from the penny to your eyes. However people treat the size of a penny like a boundary, like they would shrink their logos with its intricate details into the penny size. This is a wrong idea, doing this means neglecting the whole purpose of the visibility factor. Just like the Netflix N, in order to be able to be visible in a small scale, larger strokes should be used with as little intricacy and detail as possible. I love how you mentioned that a logo should be able to fit into the boundaries of an icon. It is an eureka moment for me. Thanks for providing us this valuable content, Will. Cheers to the future of logo design.

Will can you do a setup video showing your pc and tools that you use to create digitally, and where you also draw and do typography?

This is a funny coincidence for me that you talk about this because I have recently been commisioned to make a favicon version of a logo I designed some time ago…and because it was not designed for that purpose ,it is a bit difficult for me to find a solution but, at the same time, it is a great challenge. I think from now on I will have that into consideration when designing any new logo!

Great video Will! Also, this new mark is used on their mobile application icons, not just as a favicon; wasn't sure if you knew! 🙂
