In this tutorial, we begin to build a GUI for our Java based TRON clone. Over the course of this tutorial, we will discuss common menu placements, easy tricks to get your game up and running fast.

By the end of this tutorial, and the following part two – you should be able to rapidly prototype a well-thought out graphic user interface for your own indy games. We will use free graphics software: Paint.NET for our initial mock-up, and move on to the free version of Balsamiq for our wire-frames and final GUI mock-up.
